The return of May means we’ve entered Skin Cancer Awareness Month once again! While our Charleston Dermatology team is focused on year-round prevention and treatment, this month is a special time to share information that can help save lives from this deadly disease that will affect one in five Americans.

We’ve compiled a list of resources from trusted sources in the battle against skin cancer. Use this blog as a HUB for information to help you enjoy the Lowcountry summer sun in safety!

National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention

Established in 1998, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention is a coalition of expert medical organizations united to “prevent skin cancer through education, advocacy and raising awareness.” Their extensive member roster includes the likes of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Skin Cancer Foundation, the Melanoma Research Foundation and more. The NCOSCP sponsors the annual “Don’t Fry Day,” a skin cancer awareness day hosted on the first Friday before Memorial Day.

Learn more about the Don’t Fry Day initiative and how to become an advocate for the NCOSCP.

American Cancer Society

As the authority on cancer and cancer research, the American Cancer Society is an invaluable source of information on all things related to these dangerous diseases. Their extensive collection on skin cancer offers readers in-depth information on all types of skin cancer (basal and squamous cell, melanoma, Merkel cell, lymphoma and Kaposi sarcoma), with details on each ranging from causes and early detection to treatment options and post-treatment guidance.

Skin Cancer Foundation’s Robins Nest Program

The Robins Nest is a skin cancer patient support program created by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Navigating the battle with skin cancer can be difficult enough without the secondary challenges that come with it. The Robins Nest is a curated list of resources for financial, transportation, emotional support and more to lighten patients’ loads.

American Academy of Dermatology Association

Founded in 1938, the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) is the largest and most influential dermatological association in the world. The organization’s mission is simple: to treat, protect from and promote awareness of skin, hair and nail health issues. The AAD is a valuable resource for skin cancer education, featuring articles on all topics related to the disease, including sunscreen instruction, indoor tanning safety and skin cancer prevention guides, along with a range of other dermatological issues.
