Mohs Surgery Recovery FAQs

  • uncategorized

Mohs surgery is known as the gold standard for removing many types of skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Mohs surgery is often the treatment of choice for skin cancers that are located in areas where you want to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible (such as the face) and are aggressive in nature.

If your dermatology provider has informed you that you need Mohs surgery to treat your skin cancer, they likely have already informed you about what to expect on the day of surgery.

Have questions about what to expect after the surgery and during recovery? Let’s chat!

Do I have to stay overnight or will I be able to go home the same day?

In most cases, you can go home the same day of your Mohs surgery.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

This depends on a few factors. If your surgeon utilizes certain medications during the procedure or the location of the surgery is somewhere that could affect your driving, they may recommend that you have someone drive you home for your safety. When in doubt, have someone drive you!

Will I have stitches?

Possibly! Your surgeon may decide to repair your wound in one of several different ways. Your surgeon may decide to allow the wound to heal on its own, utilize stitches to close the wound or perform a skin graft if necessary. Your wound care will differ depending on the type of closure!
