How to Navigate Skincare for Delicate Skin Types
- skincare-tips
Navigating skin health can sometimes feel like a challenge. This is true for everyone, even those with relatively low-maintenance skin. However, while those with sensitive or reactive skin types may feel they’ve been dealt a losing hand, we’re happy to tell you that is not the case. Your skin skincare goals are achievable–it just means finding the winning strategy. A board-certified dermatologist can help you do just that.
What is sensitive skin?
Sensitive skin is any type of skin that reacts more than usual to certain stimuli. This can include irritants, allergens or certain ingredients in skin products. The reactions typically cause inflammation, which leads to sensations such as itching, rashes, dry or patchy skin, and swelling.
According to global studies, about 50-60% of women and 30-44% of men have reported having sensitive skin in some capacity. Common sensitive skin disorders include, but are not limited to, eczema, irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, rosacea, and contact or physical urticaria (hives).
How do I know I have sensitive skin?
Any of the diagnoses above are typically telltale signs of sensitive skin. But what symptoms may warrant a dermatological visit? These signs may indicate that you could have a delicate skin type:
- Redness or reactions after using hand soaps, perfumes, lotions etc.
- Consistent dry skin
- Easily prone to breakouts or consistently developing rashes
- Open sores or yellow crust on the skin’s surface
- Wrinkled, rough-textured skin
How do I take care of sensitive skin?
Caring for sensitive skin goes far beyond changing your facial cleanser or body wash. You can take steps outside of traditional skincare routines to properly care for your skin, such as:
- Take shorter, lukewarm showers to avoid irritating your skin.
- Avoid scented products, including laundry detergents.
- Apply moisturizer often to avoid dry skin.
- Use sunscreen year-round.
What skincare products should I use?
When managing sensitive skin, your skincare routine should remain simple, using simple products. Some of the most effective skincare products typically contain basic ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, retinoids and vitamin C. Avoid any skincare products with harsh ingredients, such as alcohol.
Many skincare products even have a label identifying them as useful for sensitive skin. When choosing moisturizers, look for ingredients such as aloe vera, as they typically contain soothing effects for dry, irritated skin.
