Dealing With Rosacea
What Is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a skin disease that is known to cause facial redness. However, there’s more to rosacea than redness. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology has defined four types of rosacea: Erythematotelangiectatic, Papulopustular, Phymatous and Ocular. Symptoms can vary from redness to acne-like breakouts to swollen eyelids.
Do I Have It?
Most people dealing with rosacea flush more easily than others, and their skin may be more sensitive. Spider vein and swollen skin are typical symptoms of rosacea. Other people may experience thickening of their skin with acne-like breakouts. Rhinophyma, while rarer than other symptoms, happens when the skin thickens on the nose. This may also occur on the cheeks, chin and forehead. Some people also get rosacea in their eyes, which causes blurry vision, itchiness, cysts and watery eyes.
As with other skin diseases or acne, sufferers of rosacea can experience embarrassment and decreased self-esteem due to their appearance. In fact, nearly 30 percent of people with rosacea say that their battle with this skin disease has caused them to miss work.
Rosacea is incredibly common: studies have shown that more than 14 million people suffer from rosacea. Most of these people are between 30 and 50 years old, fair-skinned and likely to have a relative that also suffers from rosacea or severe acne.
What Makes Rosacea Flare?
Rosacea can be caused by a variety of things, like recent illness, sun exposure, wind exposure, spicy foods and alcohol. Demodex, a mite that lives on human, has also been found in large quantities on people with rosacea.
