Summer’s Affect on Your Hair and Scalp

  • skincare-tips

As a South Carolina dermatology office, we’re sure you’re not surprised by the importance we place on protecting your skin during the warmer weather. Our Facebook and Instagram frequently cover this topic, sharing tips on sun-protective clothing, proper SPF use and more. This year-round sun safety prep is vital to protect from harmful UV rays.

However, during that preparation, patients often overlook the importance of protecting their heads and scalps as well. Our board-certified dermatologists are here to share why scalp protection isn’t just important; it’s vital to your health!

How does the sun affect my hair and scalp?

Unprotected sun exposure can cause as much damage to your scalp (and even your hair) as it can to the rest of your body. Signs of a sun-damaged scalp can include the following:

  • Damage to the outer layer of the hair which can result in a dry scalp.
  • Break down of hair color, leaving it dull and weak.
  • Weakening of the melanin in your scalp which can lead to premature graying.
  • Drying out the scalp which may lead to hair loss.
  • Sunburn of the scalp.

People with bald spots are at higher risk of this damage and, as a result, at higher risk of more serious diagnoses, such as precancers and skin cancers.

How can I protect my hair and scalp from the sun?

There are plenty of protective measures you can take to keep your scalp safe from the sun’s harmful UV rays. One of the common and important steps you can take is to wear sun-protective clothing, like hats and head coverings. Remember, it’s more than a fashion statement. It’s functional, too!

Other ways to protect your scalp include:

  • Avoiding peak UV hours during the summer—typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Keeping your hair moisturized.
  • Avoiding chemicals in your hair, such as pool chlorine, as they also weaken your scalp.
  • Using a hair sunscreen or a similar UV-protection-based hair product.
  • Avoiding heat styling during the summer.

But above all else, the most important step for ensuring healthy skin is scheduling routine visits with your local board-certified dermatologist.
