For most people, a new year signals a new opportunity for a fresh start. Whether that means resolving to revamp your diet or call your mother more frequently, the New Year is the perfect time to put your best foot forward. And that includes your skincare routine.

As the New Year approaches, we encourage you to re-examine your current skincare routine and ask yourself, “Am I taking proper care of my skin?”

Here are some simple skincare resolutions that we can all strive to make in 2018:

Moisturize More

Whether you have oily or dry skin, it is important to moisturize daily. Your skin thrives on moisture, and when it is not hydrated, it can become dry, flaky or even greasier if you already have oily skin. It is also important to hydrate your skin from the inside out by making sure you are drinking plenty of water on a daily basis. In fact, see if you can get rid of the fizzy sodas and sugary drinks altogether. You’ll definitely notice a difference in your skin.

Better Makeup Maintenance

One of the simplest ways you can take proper care of your skin is by making sure you remove your makeup every night. Sleeping in full makeup can often lead to clogged pores, blemishes and even infection. You should also be sure to wash your makeup brushes regularly. Oftentimes makeup brushes can house dirt and bacteria that can cause your skin to breakout.

Exfoliate Properly

With the cooler temps hanging around, it can be hard to add exfoliating to your daily skincare routine. But exfoliating is a necessary part of any healthy routine. It allows you to remove dead skin buildup and keep your skin looking and feeling smoother. When you pair a good exfoliant with a good moisturizer, you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.

Listen to Your Skin

Not everyone’s skin reacts the same to the exact same products. That’s why it is important to pay attention to what your skin is telling you and allow that to guide you toward a skincare routine that works for you. If you begin using a product and your skin starts to break out, it may be time to try something else. If your skin is more flaky than normal, ramp up your moisturizing efforts. The more in-tune you are with your skin, the better off you will be.

Schedule Regular Screenings

Just like your car needs regular tune-ups to function properly, your skin needs regular check-ups, too. Make a point to schedule regular, annual check-ups with your dermatologist to ensure your skin is healthy and your skincare routine is right for you. It’s also a good habit to get into to protect your skin against skin cancer. Schedule an appointment with Charleston Dermatology today to start your New Year off right!
