It’s a common misconception that people of color cannot get skin cancer. The truth is, anyone with skin can get skin cancer! The best way to beat skin cancer is to prevent it, so let’s chat about how to best prevent skin cancer in people of color!

Get yearly skin exams

One of the best ways to prevent skin cancer in people of color is to go see a dermatology provider for a yearly skin exam. Your dermatology provider will know what to look for when it comes to lesions of concern and they have special tools, like a dermatoscope, to exam lesions closely. Dermatologists also have the ability to test lesions by performing procedures such as biopsies. If you’ve never had a skin exam, give us a call today or book an appointment online!

Have any new or changing lesions checked

If you notice a new lesion occur, or if a spot that has been there for a long time is all of the sudden changing, be sure to make an appointment with a dermatology provider ASAP. While new or changing lesions can be normal, they can also be a sign of potential skin cancer. Diagnosing skin cancer earlier rather than later is always best!

Practice sun safety

While skin cancer in people of color can occur in any area, even areas that are never exposed to the sun, practicing sun safety is still a good idea if you’re hoping to prevent skin cancer! If you’re out in the sun for long periods of time, be sure to apply and reapply sunscreen to any areas of skin that are exposed to the sun. Long sleeves, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats are also helpful when it comes to protecting your skin!

When it comes to your skin when in doubt, check it out! It is never a bad idea to have your skin examined by a dermatologist, especially if you notice a new, different lesion! We are always happy to see you and examine your skin. Give us a call today or book your next appointment online!
