May is a critical time for skin cancer awareness and education…it is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, after all! We take our role in this process to heart, supporting our community in raising awareness, aiding in treatment and promoting skin cancer prevention strategies through tools like our annual Skin Cancer Awareness Month Resource Hub.

The Importance of Skin Cancer Awareness

Though it is the most common type of cancer, skin cancer is highly preventable and treatable – early detection is key to healthy outcomes.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 99%.”

Skin Cancer Awareness Month is so important because it reminds us of the importance of the sun safety strategies, regular skin screenings and early intervention practices that can literally save lives.

Skin Cancer Types and Risk Factors

There are several types of skin cancer – basal cell carcinoma (the most common), squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma (the most dangerous).

Skin cancer has many contributing factors, including UV radiation from the sun and indoor tanning booths and genetic predispositions. Understanding your risk factors is the first step in taking proactive steps to mitigate them.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips

While you can’t change your genes, you can take steps to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. The following risk-reduction strategies can help you protect against and detect skin cancer:

  • Sun Protection: Limit your exposure to UV radiation by seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses, and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher regularly.
  • Skin Self-Examinations: Perform regular skin self-examinations to monitor for any changes in moles, freckles or other skin lesions. Contact a dermatologist promptly if you notice any suspicious changes.
  • Annual Skin Checks: Schedule annual skin examinations with a board-certified dermatologist to assess your skin’s health and receive personalized skin cancer prevention recommendations.
  • Avoid Indoor Tanning: Refrain from using indoor tanning beds or booths, as they emit harmful UV radiation that significantly increases the risk of skin cancers.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate hydration and stress management techniques. These lifestyle factors can support overall skin health and reduce the risk of skin cancer.
