What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that occurs most commonly on the nose and central face. Patients with rosacea may notice facial flushing and blushing frequently and may have red bumps on the nose, forehead, cheeks or chin. Sensitive skin is often a complaint of patients affected by rosacea.

Is rosacea limited only to the areas of red and bumpy skin?

The inflammation that occurs with rosacea can also infiltrate the eyes and nose. Signs of eye involvement can include redness or eye irritation. Rhinophyma is a skin disorder that can occur with severe rosacea that causes the nose to appear bumpy or bulbous.

How is Rosacea treated?

A dermatology provider can provide patients with many tips to avoid flares of rosacea. There are many creams that can be applied to the skin to help decrease the redness and bumps that occur with rosacea. For moderate to severe rosacea, there are also oral medications available for treatment.
