Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States — one in five Americans will develop it by age 70. The three most common types are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, and all three are highly treatable when caught early.

About Skin Cancer Treatment Services

Most skin cancers announce themselves quietly: a new spot, a sore that won’t heal, a mole that’s changed. Regular skin checks turn those quiet signals into early catches.

At Charleston Dermatology, our physicians and providers perform full-body skin examinations, evaluate suspicious lesions with dermoscopy, and biopsy anything concerning. If cancer is found, we walk you through exactly what it is, what it means, and what happens next.

Treatment plans are built around your diagnosis and may include Mohs micrographic surgery, surgical excision, electrodesiccation and curettage, topical therapies, or radiation, with coordination alongside oncology when needed. Early detection makes nearly every skin cancer highly curable. Schedule a skin check—it’s quick, painless, and worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common and grows slowly, rarely spreading. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common and can spread if neglected. Melanoma is the most dangerous because of its ability to spread early, but it’s highly curable when caught thin. Rarer types include Merkel cell carcinoma and cancers of the skin’s glands and connective tissue.

Watch for new growths, sores that bleed or don’t heal within a few weeks, rough scaly patches, and moles that change. For moles, use the ABCDEs: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, multiple Colors, Diameter over 6mm, and Evolving. Anything new, changing, or unusual deserves an exam—and a monthly self-check takes ten minutes.

Once a year is a good baseline for most adults, and more often if you’ve had a previous skin cancer, have many or atypical moles, a family history of melanoma, or significant sun damage. If you’ve never had a full-body skin exam, there’s no better time to start than now—schedule yours today.
