Self-Care Tips For Glowing Summer Skin

From beach days and pool parties to camping and more, there are countless ways to enjoy the outdoors during a South Carolina summer. However, the season also presents its fair share of challenges when it comes to skincare. At Charleston Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologists specialize in helping you achieve your skin goals. That’s why we’ve compiled this helpful list of summer skin care tips to help you shine.

Tips for Healthy Summer Skin

As much as we love our Lowcountry home, there’s no denying South Carolina’s hot and humid climate can present unique challenges for your skin. However, these issues are avoidable with the proper skincare routine. If summer spells trouble for your skin, adopting these practices can help keep your skin healthy, glowing and protected all season long.

Practice Proper Sun Safety

South Carolina’s famous sunshine requires year-round sun safety. Start by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply it generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, ears, and any other exposed body parts. Remember to reapply every two hours or more frequently if you’re sweating or swimming.

P.S. Don’t forget about often neglected areas like the lips and the tops of your feet. Wearing protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, can provide an additional layer of defense against harmful UV rays.

Stay Hydrated

Rising temperatures can lead to dehydrated skin. Keep your skin and body well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day – about eight 8-oz. glasses for adults. Additionally, a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer can help replenish any lost moisture and help you maintain hydration to promote a healthy and vibrant complexion.

Cleanse with Care

During the summer, sweat, excess oil and environmental pollutants can build up on the skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Avoid these build-ups by using a gentle cleanser twice daily to remove impurities without stripping away the skin’s natural oils. If you have specific skin concerns, such as acne or excessive oiliness, your board-certified dermatologist can recommend products that fit your unique needs.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Not all skincare steps involve your skin directly! What you eat can also impact your skin’s health. Adopting a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and antioxidants can nourish your skin from within. Foods like berries, citrus fruits, leafy greens and nuts contain vitamins and minerals that promote healthy skin. Adversely, limit your intake of processed foods, sugary drinks and excessive caffeine, which can contribute to skin inflammation and breakouts.

Visit Your Local Board-Certified Dermatologist

If you have specific skin concerns or are unsure about the right routine for your skin type, it’s always best to consult your local dermatologist. As experts in skin care, board-certified dermatologists can provide personalized recommendations, address your skin issues and recommend appropriate skincare products tailored to your skin’s needs.
