About Our Hair Restoration Services
The hair loss industry sells a lot of hope in bottles. What actually regrows hair is an accurate diagnosis paired with treatments that have evidence behind them.
At Charleston Dermatology, every hair restoration plan begins with a medical evaluation—scalp examination, history, and lab work when needed—to identify whether you’re dealing with pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, an autoimmune condition, or an inflammatory scalp disease. The diagnosis determines everything that follows.
Treatment plans are built around your diagnosis and may combine PRP injections with prescription topical or oral medications for compounding results. The earlier treatment starts, the more hair there is to save. Schedule an evaluation and get a plan grounded in medicine, not marketing.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections
PRP uses your own blood, processed to concentrate the platelets and their growth factors, then injected into the scalp where follicles are thinning. Those growth factors stimulate follicles to shift back into their growth phase, improving hair density and thickness. Treatment typically starts with a series of monthly sessions followed by maintenance a few times a year, with visible improvement usually beginning around three to six months. Because PRP comes from your own body, allergic reactions aren’t a concern and downtime is minimal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PRP actually work for hair loss?
A standard blood draw, a spin in the centrifuge to concentrate your platelets, and a series of small injections across the thinning areas of the scalp—about 45 to 60 minutes all in. Most patients describe brief pinching and mild scalp soreness afterward. You can return to normal activity the same day; we’ll ask you to hold off on washing your hair until the next day.
What is a PRP session like?
Discomfort is brief and manageable. Botox injections feel like quick pinches and take minutes. Fillers contain lidocaine, and we use numbing cream for sensitive areas like the lips. Most patients return to their day immediately, with possible minor redness, swelling, or bruising for a few days.
Who is a good candidate for hair restoration treatment?
The best candidates are in the earlier stages of thinning, with miniaturized but living follicles. Completely bald, shiny areas have lost the follicles PRP needs to work with. Certain conditions—active scalp infections, some blood disorders—can rule PRP out, which is another reason the medical evaluation comes first. If PRP isn’t your answer, we’ll tell you, and we’ll tell you what is.
