Folliculitis

Health Library: Folliculitis

What is folliculitis?

Folliculitis is a common skin condition caused by inflamed hair follicles most commonly occurring on the chest, back, arms, legs, and buttocks. Follicles are the small pockets that surround the root of your hair. Folliculitis can look like acne and can be painful or itchy.

What causes folliculitis?

Folliculitis is most commonly caused by bacteria, but there are also many other causes of folliculitis including fungi. For this reason, an evaluation by a dermatology healthcare provider is recommended.

How is folliculitis treated?

In most cases, folliculitis is minor and resolves on its own. Folliculitis that recurs can be more difficult to treat. Fortunately, there are many treatment options that a dermatology provider can recommend based on the cause of the condition. These can include antibacterial washes, antibiotics or antifungals as well change of grooming techniques.
