At Charleston Dermatology, we are passionate about acne — passionate about getting rid of it!

What is acne?

Acne is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, acne is the most common skin condition in the United States.

What causes acne?

Acne is caused when dirt, oils and bacteria come together and clog your pores. Often, hormones are the worst perpetrators, triggering acne when you are at your most vulnerable. This is why teenagers often suffer the worst, as well as women in a cyclical monthly fashion. Clogged pores lead to bothersome blackheads and whiteheads (referred to as comedones) and unsightly pus bumps (inflammatory pustules). The most concerning type of acne involves deeper cysts, which can lead to permanent scarring.

How is acne treated?

Fortunately, there are an incredible amount of effective acne treatments available. From pore-cleansing, prescription strength topical creams to oral medications, we can find a treatment regimen that works for you. However, acne treatments take a significant amount of time and patience in order to work.

Have a special event coming up you want to look your best for? Just ask us about our pore-cleansing acne peels, which can accelerate the treatment process and help you achieve a clear, beautiful complexion.
