We know that a lot of you started off the New Year with a long to-do list. Whether that included a list of skincare resolutions or you simply wanted to focus more time on your overall health, a strong to-do list can help you get on the right track toward a happier, healthier life.

As you take a look at your calendar this year, we encourage you to take a moment to pencil in a check-in with your dermatologist — and here’s why:

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. and more than 3 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year. Chances are, you or someone you know, has dealt with some form of skin cancer at some point in your life.

Fortunately, skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer and is highly treatable. The key is early detection.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the average survival rate for individuals whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent. 98 percent! That’s an extremely comforting statistic.

The only issue is that a lot of times, individuals don’t take the time to schedule an annual skin cancer screening or they simply aren’t aware of what to look for.

One of the best things you can do for your skin — and yourself — is to schedule regular, annual skin cancer screenings. At the very least, you should be keeping an eye out for any skin abnormalities that may appear on your body. Keep your ABCDE’s in mind and if you have any questions about a particular skin abnormality, consult with a board-certified dermatology immediately.

The sooner you can detect and treat skin cancer, the better.

From all of us at Charleston Dermatology, we encourage you to pull out that planner and schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists today. After all, it could end up saving your life.
