If you’ve read our previous blog, you know that dry skin is common during the winter months and that there are ways to prevent your skin from drying out. But what if your skin is already dried out? How do you care for it?
This week, we’re sharing some simple ways you can soothe your dry skin and get it back into tip-top shape.
First, it’s important to avoid further irritating your already dry, cracked skin. Petroleum jelly is a great way to add an extra level of protection to your skin, while adding some more moisture. The best part is that it’s cheap and can be used on your skin, lips, feet and anywhere else that may be dry. Be aware that it may worsen acne, so avoid using it on the face or acne prone areas.
You should also avoid wearing any rough fabrics and stick to cotton or silk clothing. Use detergent that is labeled “hypoallergenic,” to keep your skin away from any fragrances or harsh chemicals that could further irritate your already sensitive skin.
Avoid using deodorant soaps or skincare products that contain alcohol, fragrance, retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). This applies to hand sanitizers, too. Although it is important to wash your hands regularly to help stave off a cold or the flu, the alcohol-based sanitizers can further dry out your skin. Look for hydrating sanitizers that are non-alcohol-based, and if you choose to wash your hands with soap and water, make sure you apply moisturizer immediately afterwards.
If your skin is extremely dry, you may want to schedule an appointment with your dermatologist. They will be able to determine the right moisturizers for your skin and help you develop a successful skincare routine that will get your skin back to looking and feeling its best.
