How To Create A Skincare Routine
- skincare-tips
As the body’s largest organ and its first defense, our skin requires the utmost care. But this is often easier said than done. Your skin’s needs are as unique as you are. So, how can you create a skincare routine to meet them? These considerations will help you get started.
Start with the basics.
Like many things in life, you can have “too much of a good thing” when it comes to your skincare. For example, retinoids and hydroxy acids can be beneficial when applied properly, but overuse or misuse of these active ingredients can cause damage instead – more on this below.
Sometimes, less is more when building your routine. Consider beginning with the basics, like daily face washing:
- A.M. Routine: Cleanse with a nonabrasive cleanser and moisturize with sunscreen (SPF 30+).
- P.M. Routine: Cleanse again to remove debris from the day, and apply an overnight moisturizing cream.
While it may not seem like much, these two simple steps in the morning and night are the foundation for a successful skincare journey.
Consider your skin goals.
There is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” skincare routine. Your dermatologist will work with you to identify your skin health goals and explore options best suited to your skin type. For example…
Do you want to reduce dark spots?
Hyperpigmentation is a common cosmetic occurrence in which the overproduction of melanin causes skin discoloration or “dark spots” to appear.
Dermatological treatments that can help remove dark spots from the skin include chemical peels, laser therapy treatments or Topical medications, such as retinoids or those containing hydroquinone.
Hyperpigmentation is commonly caused by sun overexposure. When creating your skincare routine, daily year-round SPF use and peak sunlight hour avoidance (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) is a must.
Do you want to reduce lines, wrinkles and signs of aging?
Fine lines and wrinkles are a common sign of aging. However, no one said that aging means you have to look your age. Retinoids are one solution to smoothing out unwanted skin issues with the added benefit of improving dark spots, stimulating collagen and increasing cell turnover.
As mentioned earlier, retinoids such as retinol have the potential to cause irritation when implemented incorrectly. However, they present wonderful benefits when introduced gradually and with care:
- Apply one night only for the first week.
- Apply two nights weekly for two weeks.
If your skin shows no sign of flaking, inflammation or discomfort:
- Apply three nights weekly for three weeks.
- Apply every other night indefinitely.
Looking to prevent the signs of aging before they appear? Vitamin C serum contains antioxidants that help prevent damage from free radicals. Cosmetic injections such as Botox® and Juvederm® can also be used preventatively. Consult your dermatologist to learn more about these and more cosmetic solutions.
Do you want to prevent acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that affects people of all ages, but it is most commonly associated with adolescents. While there are various treatments available for acne, there are just as many steps for prevention.
Acne prevention can include both dermatological and lifestyle changes. Some of the most common steps include the following:
- Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser.
- Use “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic” products to avoid clogged pores.
- Avoid touching your face with your hands.
- Exercise regularly to improve blood circulation, which helps keep the skin healthy.
While not all causes of acne are avoidable, these steps will help reduce the likelihood of unwanted outbreaks. As an added reminder, do not pick or pop your pimples, as it can lead to scarring and further inflammation.
