At Charleston Dermatology, we are passionate about acne — passionate about getting rid of it!
What is acne?
Acne is a common skin disease that occurs when hair follicles are blocked with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. Acne commonly affects the face, back, and chest.
What causes acne?
Acne is often caused when dead skin cells and oil clog your pores. Hormones can also trigger acne from teenage years to adult years. There are several different types of acne bumps including whiteheads, blackheads, inflamed red bumps (or papules), inflamed red bumps with pus (pustules), and cystic acne. Deep, cystic acne bumps can often lead to scarring, so if you are struggling with acne, be sure to make an appointment to avoid any further damage to your skin.
How is acne treated?
The good news is, there are several different treatment options available for acne. From topical creams to oral medications, we can tailor an acne treatment to best address your specific type of acne. It is important to note, there are not many “overnight quick fixes” for acne. Many acne treatments take time and consistency to work, but we are here for you along the way! If you have tried several over the counter acne products with no improvement, be sure to make an appointment to see one of our providers to create an acne regimen just for you!
