Exercise and Your Skin

We all know that exercise is good for us. It has been proven time and again to have countless benefits for our physical and mental health. But did you know that exercise can actually benefit your skin’s health, too?

It’s true! Exercise promotes healthy blood and oxygen circulation throughout your body, which in turn helps draw toxins out of the body. Think of it as cleansing your body from the inside out.

Plus, working up a sweat is similar to getting a mini facial. When your pores dilate, sweat expels the trapped dirt and oil. You just have to make sure you wash your face right after, so the dirt doesn’t go right back into your open pores.

Exercise has even been shown the increase your immune system by getting the body to release more white blood cells, including neutrophils and natural killer cells — which are both beneficial to your skin’s health. You’ll find that when you’re exercising regularly, small blemishes and skin wounds tend to heal faster, too.

Additionally, the nutrients delivered to the skin during exercise has been shown to boost your skin’s collagen production, which leads to smoother skin overall.

In one study conducted by researchers at McMaster University in Ontario, they discovered that a steady regiment of exercise could actually stave off the signs of aging.

The study found that after the age of 40, men and women who exercised frequently had skin that was closer in composition to that of the 20- and 30-year-olds than that of others their age, even if they were past the age of 65.

Finally, exercise tends to help you sleep better at night, which gives your skin the time it needs to repair and give you that fresh morning glow.

So, what do you think? Will you begin to start ramping up your exercise regime to improve the health of your skin?
